About the Ensemble…

For nearly a decade in Indianapolis, Forward Motion has advocated for the creation of new works by presenting innovative performances in a variety of spaces. The ensemble focuses on the performance of new works and free improvisations.

Forward Motion has commissioned and premiered dozens of new chamber works from composers such as Rob Funkhouser, Caroline KyungA Ahn, Eliza Brown, Jorge Muñiz, Clockwork Janz, Jared Thompson, Gabrielle Ceberville and many others. Forward Motion’s core instrumentation consists of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion; the group's activity is fluid and involves many innovative combinations of this core instrumentation. The core members regularly compose for the group bringing about a wide-range of creative expressions.  

Forward Motion has partnered with many local non-profit organizations to build community around the creation of new and improvised music. Recent partnerships include Classical Music Indy, which has supported the premiere and recording of four new works by Indiana composers and Indy Convergence, which has supported innovative cross-disciplinary performances at White River State Park.

The members of Forward Motion continue to be dedicated educators, committed to encouraging music students of all levels to participate in creative music making. Forward Motion presents masterclasses on a variety of topics including the commissioning process, collaboration, effective rehearsing, improvisation and career strategies.

About Our Members…

Jennifer Page, flute

Jennifer Page, our flutist and a Forward Motion founding member, maintains an active freelance career as both a performer and music educator. As a performer, Jennifer strives to move audiences beyond the simple enjoyment of music to a deeper connection that begs for contemplation and self reflection. She believes that art and music have the power to bring positive change and healing to a broken world. Jennifer is a marathoner, rock climber, and outdoor enthusiast.

Eric Salzar, clarinet

Eric Salazar is our clarinetist, founding member, and director of Forward Motion. In performance, Eric unapologetically embraces vulnerability in a way that invites the listener into a safe space for reflection and connection. Eric effortlessly merges classical, jazz, and ambient aesthetic with the use of traditional instrumentation and inventive electronic sounds, creating unique and fantastical sound worlds. Eric is an avid tea drinker, soccer player, and Dungeons and Dragons enthusiast. Eric performs on a Pereira 3D printed clarinet and ligature.

Ashton Vickery, piano

Ashton Vickery, pianist, and a member of Forward Motion since 2019, collaborates frequently with Indianapolis area musicians, drawing on a wide range of repertoire and styles. Since graduating from the University of Indianapolis, Allison has delved into studying and performing new music with Forward Motion. Allison keeps active with playing soccer and basketball and refuels by cooking a meal to share or exploring Indy’s food scene with friends.

Corey Denham, percussion

Corey Denham, our percussionist and a Forward Motion founding member. is committed to the commissioning and performance of new and improvised music. As a commissioner and collaborator Corey has worked closely with musicians, composers, dancers, choreographers and multi-media artists. Corey is a staff dance accompanist at Point Park University and teaches a studio of private students at Sunburst School of Music in Pittsburgh PA. He serves as a board member for New Works Project a non-profit organization that enables musicians to participate in the commissioning of new music at an accessible price.
